THE DESIGN PROCESS

Choosing the right design:

It is important to choose the right design for any piece of jewellery. The purpose of the piece affects the design as it should fit into your lifestyle.

An engagement ring, for example, is something that is worn everyday for the rest of your life, therefore it is very important that it is able to take the wear and tear of your daily routine.

Things to look at while browsing for Engagement ring designs:

Do you want a delicate claw set ring or a sturdier bezel set ring?
Do you like a big stone or rather a few smaller stones?
Do you like Diamonds or coloured stones?
Do you like Round stones or an interesting shape like Square or Oval Stones?
Do you want engraving on your ring?
Do you prefer a thin band or a wider band?
Would you like a solitaire ring, halo ring or maybe a cluster setting?
Do you like White metal or rather Yellow or Rose coloured?
Do you like Vintage or more Modern and simplistic rings?
Is it a ring that you will feel comfortable wearing everyday?

MANUFACTURING

Choosing your Metal:

Your skin tone, budget, and allergies determine the correct type of metal for your jewellery piece. Commissions are done in 9Ct & 18Ct White Gold, 9Ct & 18Ct Yellow Gold, 18Ct Rose Gold and Platinum.

Choosing the right stone:

The stone is the biggest determining factor of a design and it is therefore very important to select the correct stone for your budget and purpose. Whether Diamond or Precious Gemstone make sure that you choose the correct option for your personality and lifestyle.

In the case of rings that get worn every day, it’s important that the stone is durable and won’t need replacing. Because of this Diamonds, the hardest stones, are still the most popular choice for Engagements rings. Not only is a Diamond a good investment but you can be sure that it will last long enough to be passed on to children and grandchildren.

Cut:

The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance. Put simply, the better a diamond is cut, the more sparkle it will have. The cut can also refer to the shape of the diamond (refer to chart below).

Colour:

After cut, colour is generally considered the second most important characteristic when selecting a diamond. The whiter the diamond, the better the grade. A colour grade of D is the highest possible, while Z is the lowest. In rare cases diamonds may be graded as “fancy coloured”, meaning they are graded by the intensity of the hue (yellows, pinks and blues) and other than with white diamonds, the more colour, the rarer.

Clarity:

Clarity is a measure of the number and size of the tiny imperfections that occur in almost all diamonds. Generally the greater the number and size of inclusions the lower the clarity grade and the less rare the diamond. A diamond revealing no such inclusions is known as flawless and treasured for its rarity.

Carat:

The weight of a diamond is measured in carat, and by itself may not accurately reflect a diamond’s size. Diamonds of equal carat-weight may vary greatly in brilliance depending on their symmetry and cut, so carat-weight on its own is an unreliable guide for value.

Faceted Diamonds:

For the non-traditional client that prefers an organic and natural style there is also the option of acquiring a unique ‘faceted cut’ diamond.

Coloured Diamonds:

Cognac, Fancy brown, Champagne and Black diamonds are also great options for more non traditional rings.

GEMSTONES AND OTHER PRECIOUS STONES

When considering something other than a diamond for your engagement ring it is advisable that you choose a stone with a hardness above 7. Gemstones like these will be hard enough to last a long time. Popular Gemstones that are quite hard and used for engagement rings include: Sapphires, Rubies, Emeralds and Morganites.

Thérèse will be happy to assist in sourcing a wide variety of gemstones.
